Before starting your journey to find services, it’s critical you identify your state Independent Service Coordinator (ISC), who can provide a variety of services to help a child with IDD, including:
- Individualized Planning: An ISC works with the child, family, and other professionals to create a personalized support plan that addresses the child’s unique needs, strengths, and goals.
- Educational Support: The ISC can help ensure the child receives appropriate educational services, including support with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). They may also work with teachers and school staff to implement effective strategies in the classroom.
- Behavioral Interventions: The ISC can develop and implement behavior management plans to address challenging behaviors. They can also provide training and support to parents and caregivers on how to handle specific behaviors.
- Therapeutic Services: An ISC can help coordinate various therapeutic services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. They ensure that these services are integrated into the child’s daily routine and overall support plan.
- Social Skills Development: The ISC can assist in creating outcomes that support service providers in implementing programs and activities aimed at helping the child develop social skills, enhance communication, and build relationships with peers.
- Community Integration: The ISC can assist in finding and accessing community resources, recreational programs, and activities that promote inclusion and participation in the community.
- Family Support and Training: ISCs provide support and training to family members to help them understand the child’s needs and how to best support their development and well-being.
- Advocacy: The ISC advocates for the child’s rights and needs within various systems, such as education, healthcare, and social services, ensuring that the child receives appropriate and effective support.
- Crisis Intervention: In situations where the child may experience a crisis, the ISC can provide immediate support and work on developing long-term strategies to prevent future crises.
- Transition Planning: For older children, an ISC can help with transition planning to adulthood, including preparation for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living.
