Turning Passion into Opportunity: Inside Little City’s Employment First Program

Discover how Little City’s Employment First Program uses customized employment to help people with disabilities turn passions into meaningful careers and independence.

When you talk to Chris Lucente, Little City’s Employment First Manager, one thing becomes immediately clear – he isn’t just helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities find jobs; he’s helping them find purpose.

Little City is one of four agencies in Illinois with a full customized employment contract through the state’s Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS). Little City is redefining what meaningful work can look like for people with disabilities. Through customized employment, staff create new positions or self-employment opportunities that reflect each person’s unique strengths, passions, and goals.

Chris and his team spend their days out in the community – meeting clients where they are, whether at home, in libraries, or at local coffee shops – to discover what truly motivates them. From there, they help design employment opportunities that fit their ambitions.

Through customized employment, Little City has helped people turn creative ideas into thriving ventures and connect others to meaningful community-based jobs. From artists to educators and technology enthusiasts, each person’s journey looks different – but the goal is the same: to build work that brings purpose, confidence, and independence.

With support from DRS – which helps fund work accommodations and small business startup costs, participants can turn possibility into reality. Some pursue self-employment and creative businesses, while others find long-term success in positions with inclusive employers.

Creating Space for Everyone to Work and Thrive

In addition to customized employment, Little City partners with companies like Mariano’s, Jewel-Osco, Goodwill, Church Creek, Northwestern Medicine, and Sunrise Senior Living to expand access to meaningful work. The team goes beyond placement – they offer coaching, employer training, and continued support to ensure long-term success.

Chris’s dedication shines through in every story. Whether helping design adaptive tools, connecting with employers, or learning new skills to better support someone’s interests, he approaches the work with empathy, creativity, and genuine care. His passion is a reminder that disability employment isn’t about limitations – it’s about unlocking potential.
